Describing Mystery

King David writes this Psalm with wild and glorious metaphors to describe our God who is beyond description.

Who is this God we are invited to trust? What is it like to discover God trustworthy? Or wrestle with doubt about God’s character or intent?

This song invites us to re-anchor ourselves in God’s eternal, unchanging character. Go slow with this text today. What pictures come to your mind as you dwell in this passage with God? This is an invitation to sense freshly your own experience of God and mystery. Be compassionate and patient with yourself as find your own way to describe what the mystery of God feels like for you.

Psalm 36: 5-10 NLT

Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens;
your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the ocean depths.
You care for people and animals alike, O LORD.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
You feed them from the abundance of your own house,
letting them drink from your river of delights.
For you are the fountain of life,
the light by which we see.

For Reflection and Prayer:

Was there a word, a phrase, an image, or feeling that “shimmered: as you listened? Linger with it as you notice how it lands in you.

Reflect on what you noticed, perhaps journaling or drawing or coloring what is there for you.

Bring what you noticed it into a conversational prayer with God. Journal what Jesus says in response to you.

Take some time to savor any consolations or encouragement you received from the Lord. Simply rest in God’s loving care for you in this moment.
