The Wild Majesty of God

Sarah Patton invites us to listen in and pray this week.

Listening to the psalm, the words “ always steady” stayed. Then the phrase “more powerful than the roar of many waters” evoked a memory of watching the waves of a turbulent ocean. Witnessing the crashing waves, my soul filled with awe. I wondered about the combination of steady faithfulness and raw power — the wild majesty of God.

As I meditated on the words, a prayer came:

O God, You are more powerful, mightier than the roaring sea.
Present from the beginning of time, Eternal one, you reign invincible above all. Always steady, never faltering.
You are faithful beyond what I can imagine.
I am held in your love, living securely with you, radiant in your shining presence. Amen

Pause for a moment. What image of God comes as you linger with the words of the psalm? Is there a word or phrase that stays? Perhaps an emotion rises up or you may notice you feel it in your body. Whatever comes, bring it into prayerful conversation knowing you are loved and held in the steady faithfulness of God.

Psalm 93 – NRSV
The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed; he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
more majestic than the waves[a] of the sea,
majestic on high is the Lord!
Your decrees are very sure;
holiness befits your house,
O Lord, forevermore.

Psalm 93 – The Complete Psalms
God reigns, adorned with splendor,
Adorned with power, the Eternal is crowned with strength.
You made the earth firm so it would not falter.
Your throne is always steady.
You have been present from the beginning of time.
The rivers grew swollen,God.
They lifted their voice.
They raised their crashing waves.
More powerful than the roar of many waters,
mightier than the breaking sea,
invincible in the heights is your presence.
Your testimonies are faithful beyond measure.
Your house shines with holy splendor.
You live on, God, for the length of days.

For Reflection and Prayer:
Was there a word, a phrase, image, or feeling that ‘shimmered’ as you listened? Allow it
to land in your heart. Stay with it. Savor it.

Reflect on what you heard. What effect does it have on you? What meaning does it hold
for you? What does the Holy Spirit seem to be conveying to you? Talk it over in your
prayer.

Perhaps you want to draw or color your prayer or journal the conversation.

As the time of prayer comes to a close, share some moments of quiet with Jesus,
simply resting safely in his presence.
