In uncertain times like these, it is vital for us to know within us where our safety lies. One way we can deepen in our experience of finding refuge in God is to notice where God’s specific love for each of us is being made manifest to us. We can ask ourselves, “where is God’s unfailing love pursuing me right now in this moment”?
Another way we can notice God’s love is to place ourselves imaginatively within the scriptural story we are listening to. Can we picture in great sensory detail what it might be like to be given permission to lie down in lush, green meadows or beside peaceful streams? Can we picture and describe what it is like to have God walk beside us in dark valley’s? Give yourself time to linger in this familiar, healing Psalm. May the Holy Spirit lead us to discover our own reasons for finding solace in these words of King David.
Psalm 23 (NLT)
The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the LORD forever.
